I harvested my turmeric!

This marks the third time I’ve consumed something I grew myself, and the feeling is truly empowering. I planted the turmeric roughly six months ago, and watching it grow has been a rewarding experience. The leaves are stunning, and I learned that they can also be used to make tea.

Interestingly, I initially purchased the turmeric roots at Palace Mall in Labone and planted them in cocopeat sourced from Nhyiraba Fiber. The planting started around August 2023, and I just harvested them in January 2025. I think I might have been able to leave them in the ground a few weeks longer, but when I noticed some of the leaves wilting, I decided it was time to harvest. The aroma of the freshly harvested turmeric was incredibly fresh and invigorating, and the vibrant color was a feast for the eyes. Just a word of caution: turmeric stains everything it touches, so be sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained when handling it.

After harvesting, I processed the turmeric by juicing it and blending it with lemon and ginger. I intended to make turmeric shots but decided to skip the hassle of small containers. Instead, I stored the mixture in a large glass bottle in the refrigerator. Each morning, I take a small splash, and it feels revitalizing every time.

Turmeric is celebrated not only for its vibrant color and aroma but also for its numerous health benefits. Here are some of its notable advantages:

  1. Anti-inflammatory properties: Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects. It can help reduce chronic inflammation, which is linked to various diseases.
  2. Antioxidant power: Curcumin is a strong antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals in the body, helping to reduce oxidative stress and protect cells.
  3. Supports joint health: Turmeric may help alleviate joint pain and stiffness, making it beneficial for those with arthritis or similar conditions.
  4. Boosts immune function: Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties contribute to a stronger immune system, helping the body fend off illnesses.
  5. Improves digestion: Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine to support healthy digestion and alleviate bloating and gas.
  6. Enhances skin health: With its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, turmeric can promote glowing skin and help combat acne.
  7. Supports heart health: Turmeric’s ability to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation may contribute to a healthier cardiovascular system.
  8. May enhance brain function: Studies suggest that curcumin can increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which may improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
  9. Helps manage blood sugar levels: Turmeric has shown potential in supporting stable blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for individuals managing diabetes.

Incorporating turmeric into your daily routine, whether as a juice, tea, or spice in cooking, can have profound benefits for your overall health. Growing and consuming my own turmeric has been a gratifying journey, and I highly recommend giving it a try!
